Manitoba Pioneer Camp: Canoe Trip

After everyone registered at CMU, Site 1 went straight to Manitoba Pioneer Camp. The next day we embarked on a 3 day canoe trip on Shoal Lake. The weather was warm and sunny, the canoes were sturdy and strong and the students were friendly and fun.

Article written by Jeremy Enright

The morning of day one of our canoe trip the weather was not great but with a little faith in God it turned beautiful by the time we left. At the camp site during our first night we broke up into groups to make a fire, cook dinner and set up tents. After dinner we had a devotional time. We talked about beauty and what beauty we noticed throughout the day. We then talked about what stopped us from seeing beauty on a daily basis.

After a good night's rest we woke up, had a good meal and got back on the water. It was rough paddling because of the wind and waves but we worked hard and were rewarded with cliff jumping and finding an old abandoned gold mine. At our next devotional time we talked about brokenness. As we were discussing all this around the fire, I thought of a verse in Ezekiel. "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." (Ezekiel 36:26) This made me think that in order to grow with God we need to be broken and vulnerable towards him.

On the last day we slept in and then headed back to Base Camp. We stopped for lunch and had a debrief of our canoe trip in our canoes. By the end of the trip we were tired and our muscles ached but we had an amazing time and we all became friends.
